“ I love bbq and let me just say this place will not let you down, this place has THE best beef ribs and brisket I've ever eaten in my life. I promise you'll be back. ”
“ Awesome. Food, service, ambiance. "Love Shack" was playing when i got here, loads of similar music playing. Seating indoors, all booths. TV on. Quaint, cozy, casual. Didn't even look at my phone once. Got the lunch special w/bread and a side Beef ribs & potato salad I need a bib for the mess I made Felt like Fred Flintstone eating brontosaurus ribs. Amazing sauce. Paired it with a beer, but I didn't even touch that while the ribs were here. So good, great portions for the lunch special. ”

“ I have been coming to Dr. Hogly Wogly's for years and they have always been very consistent with the quality of their BBQ. My go-to order is the bbq beef ribs dinner with the baked beans and potato salad. The ribs are very meaty and the bbq sauce has a great flavor. ”
“ I've been coming to Dr. Hogly Wogly for about 35 years, and back then there was essentially no other authentic Texas BBQ to be found in town. Nowadays, with the proliferation of places like Bludso's and Baby Blues, Maple Block, Moo's and on and on, you've got a lot of choices with a wide variety of BBQ food, but when you need a cure for what ails you, it's always a good idea to head back to the Doctor. The small, shack-like location has been dishing out their brand of BBQ since 1969. The place was given a makeover recently, and it has a less lived-in feel than it used to, but the smell of smoked meats still draws you in and lets you know you're in for a good time. The seating is all booths, so you quickly get comfortable, and the waitstaff is always friendly and attentive. I was served by Cindy, a veteran of 35 years (she seems to have been hired right around the time I first discovered the place). She's waited on me countless times over the years, and she's always been just the nicest server you'd ever want to have. There are many, many options on the menu, especially now that they've expanded their slate of lunch specials. Yes, the prices are cheaper on the specials, but the portions are also smaller, which is a good idea for a midday meal because their normal portions are quite large (especially 2-way and 3-way combos, which are enough for multiple people to share and still go home very full). I'm a huge fan of their Texas Hot Links -- they're course ground and pack a serious punch. Their brisket is always tasty, and their other smoked meats (pork, ham, beef, chicken) are all worthy of your time. But today I decided to have the Spare Ribs: meaty, center-cut pork ribs full of flavor. I always order a side of the house-made macaroni salad, which is as simple as can be and yet somehow the very best mac salad in town. Not kidding. Large elbow macaroni mixed with diced celery, mayo and a touch of salt. Anyone could make it for themselves, but likely no one could make it so well. I have often come in and bought quarts of the mac salad to serve as a side dish with a meal I'm making at home. Also on the side, a warm half loaf of the house-made bread, which is a yeasty white bread boasting a puffy center just perfect for soaking up butter or extra sauce or both. Now some people complain about what they call a "watery sauce" that comes on each plate. This is a misnomer. This is not "watered down BBQ sauce," as one Yelper bemoaned, but a richly seasoned Au Jus that's used to keep the meat moist and add further flavor. It's like when a roast beef restaurant ladles au jus onto your prime rib. The actual, house made BBQ sauces are served in hot and sweet varieties on the side, so that you can put on however much you want. And if the jus isn't your speed, you can ask for your meat to be served without it. But don't call it Watery BBQ sauce, because that's just not what it is. A slice of sweet potato or pecan pie is the perfect dessert, and you can wash it all down with soft drinks or beer; no full bar here, but that's totally okay -- a martini or vodka/tonic would be out of place here (a shot of whiskey would work, but you'll survive without it). In the end, no matter how many other places come into the city, a restaurant in business for 55 years is doing something right; you owe it to yourself to stop in and taste what they're doing. ”
“ Staff is very attentive. Food is good. They gave me a bit of spicy bbq sauce which was delicious! The non spicy bbq sauce was really good too. Place is small and quaint. ”
“ Very friendly service every time I've dined here. I love the value of this place, and it always makes for a nice casual dinner with a group of people. ”
“ We met friends here because they had dined there several times and enjoyed the food. I wish that I had done more research about the restaurant than just reading Yelp reviews. I didn't know that this bbq restaurant prepares and serves East Texas style bbq which is strikingly different than Central Texas bbq that I appreciate. After reading about the methods used to prepare the various meats, I now have a better appreciation of what I ordered. I did enjoy the meal but I probably would have had a different mindset if I knew then what I know now. I will enjoy the leftovers more though. The restaurant is small but was busy with numerous takeout orders being filled while we were there. The service was good and the waitress was very helpful and honestly answered all my questions. The baby back ribs were very tasty and moist from the marinade they use, the brisket was cut thin and might have been a little overcooked and the links were spicy but nothing outstanding. I suppose if you are from East Texas you would know if this place meets the high standards for quality bbq from that region. I don't know if I would go back and that's only because I'm used to a different kind of bbq (dry rub and smoked with sauce on the side). Aside from this, the portions were generous and the sides were okay. The meats are the star in any bbq joint anyway. Here the meats are a Lone Star original. ”
“ Solid 5 stars! It's an honor to have grown up with this business in my neighborhood. Brought my Mom and Sis for some dinner and realized I've never left a review for Dr. H-W's Tyler Texas Style BBQ (est. 1969). Parking is not difficult. Location is clean, cozy, casual, family friendly. Not large, but large tables for larger groups are available. And the food is excellent. It's BBQ! I'm a big fan of the pulled pork. ”
“ TDLR: It's not the Texas style bbq that I got used to. It's very saucy and you're at the mercy of liking their sauce, else risking not liking the meal at all. The meats look fine but was on the dry side overall. They're also not cheap compared to what someone could get in Dallas. I'd only go back if I'm in the area and really want bbq. Beef rib: It's dry, the taste is okay but I've had way more that are better, and getting the meat off the bone was a big struggle. I also can't help but notice the meat being less than what I was expecting. Brisket: Dry and the taste profile is whatever the sauce is. Watered down BBQ sauce. It's oddly tough too. I was expecting something that was melting in my mouth. What I got was more Chinese style beef brisket that was more tender that most cooks and cuts, but not Texas style brisket. Baby back rips: Best of the bunch. It was seasoned well and the pork was very tender. Macaroni salad: It's macaroni mixed in with mayonnaise and seasonings. It's hard to mess up. Bread: It's soft and it sucked up the watered down bbq sauce nicely. Service: The staff were nice and the food came in hot and relatively quickly. No complaints here. Ambiance: Felt like an older diner in the middle of nowhere. Fits the motif, so I'm not gonna complain about it. ”
